Kalkhoff Aegis is a city bike helmet designed with the Kalkhoff design language in mind. Kalkhoff is a leading brand in high-quality electrical bikes. Their design language can be described by words such as Scandinavian design and German engineering. The result of the project is Kalkhoff Aegis, a bike helmet designed for ensuring a safe ride in cities.
Design exploration happened through research on silhouettes of different helmets. Out of this silhouette exploration, a first shape was created via sub-division modelling. This shape was used to explore the integration of signalling light and ventilation.
In a later phase, it is decided to not include lighting in the helmet as Kalkhoff bikes are always fitted with built-in lighting. The silhouette is slightly adapted to the Kalkhoff look and feel, by increasing the sharpness of the bends at certain places. A distinctive element of the shape will be the negative space needed for ventilation within the helmet, an element that is further explored.
Kalkhoff Aegis is designed to match the design language of high-quality and premium electric bikes. Great care is taken in picking the right colours for the helmet and placing the decals. To emphasize the safety factor of the helmet, international orange is chosen as a secondary colour. A colour that stands out, both in terms of safety on the road and within the Kalkhoff brand. The name Aegis comes from Greek mythology and means doing something under the protection of a strong force.
