The Belgian Railways Class 30 concept is the next-generation multiple unit that will run between Belgian cities. The design requirements of this new train were released in December 2022 and specify a versatile multiple unit with both single and bi-level coaches. Next to the more traditional EMUs (Electric Multiple Unit), the design also needs to be suitable as BEMUs (Battery Electric Multiple Unit).
This project imagines a concept design for the future class 30.
The exterior design of the train is envisioned in between the (predicted) SNCB fleet of trains in 2040. First, an analysis of the main design characteristics is done.
Ideation
Since the yellow zone defines the main look of the train, this is a good starting point to give any shape imaginable already the look of a train. The side view of the train must fulfil aerodynamic needs and embody the element of speed. Many different angles and proportions of the distinctive lines are tested until the final one is chosen.
The chosen side view is now translated into what could be the front view of the train. These sketches are the base for exploration in 3D, adding more depth to the design.

Lighting is the element that can truly give character to the train. Exploration is done with more conventional lighting as well as with a more futuristic light concept.
Final design
After the ideation phase, the design is finalized and details are refined. An element that sets the design apart are the 'jaw' lines of the train.
Artist impressions
The final design is transformed into a 3D CAD model with surface modelling techniques. With the SNCB livery applied, the exterior design of the Class 30 concept train is finished.
What's next?
